How did you get here? (working in the digital world)

RYAN – I am attracted to technology because it allows me to express my creativity by building apps that bring ideas to life.

HAMZA – My interest in technology ignited at university when one of my professors introduced me to programming. I quickly realised that coding was more than just a skill—it felt like a creative art form. This blend of logic and creativity drew me in, and I discovered a passion for programming that continues to inspire me.

What was your first experience with computers or technology?

RYAN – It was a very old game called Battle City that I first played on the computer and I had a lot of fun with it.

HAMZA – My first memorable experience with technology was in 2013 when I developed a Tic Tac Toe game during my degree. It was a significant achievement, as it involved socket programming for multiplayer functionality. The project was well-received by my professors and marked a key moment in my tech journey, igniting my passion for software development.

What training/courses/resources or mentors were helpful in your career development?

RYAN – I primarily developed my tech skills through self-teaching using various online resources.

HAMZA – During my first degree (Bachelor’s in Computer Science), where Professor Qamar Askari played a pivotal role in my development. He taught me foundational skills in programming, game development, automata theory, and digital logic design, which broadened my perspective on technology. From there, I self-taught various technologies, completed small projects for clients, and launched my career in tech.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the tech industry today?

RYAN – Perhaps the significance of collaboration and communication – I used to believe that tech jobs primarily involved coding independently, but I’ve come to realise that effective communication with teammates and managers is also crucial.

HAMZA – My advice for those starting in the tech industry is to find a good mentor and learn steadily, giving yourself time to grow. Start with small projects, like simple games, to gain hands-on coding experience. This approach not only builds foundational skills but also fuels your interest, making the learning process engaging and rewarding.

What's the most rewarding part of your job as a tech professional?

RYAN – It enhances my problem-solving abilities and enables me to develop innovative solutions.

HAMZA – The most rewarding part of my job as a tech professional is the continuous learning and diverse experiences I gain from engaging in different projects. The encouragement and appreciation from colleagues, particularly from mentors like Nicholas Cole, keep me motivated. Above all, I take great pride in being a developer, as it aligns perfectly with my passion and interests.

If you could time travel back to the past, what piece of tech would you bring with you in your DeLorean/TARDIS and why?

RYAN – I would bring a smartphone to show people how advanced communication technology has become.

HAMZA – If I could bring a piece of modern tech back in time, I’d choose AI technology. An AI-powered system could revolutionise multiple fields—from predictive analytics in science to advanced medical diagnostics—accelerating technological and medical advancements by decades. It would be a game-changer for communication, problem-solving, and innovation.
